Many books have been written on particular aspects of medieval archaeology, or on particular parts of the period, but synthesis across the whole spectrum has not been attempted before. The aim of this book is to examine the contribution that archaeology can make to an understanding of the social, economic, religious and other developments that took place in England from the migrations of the fifth and sixth centuries to the beginning of the Renaissance, showing how society and economy evolved in that time-span. Drawing on the latest available material, the book takes a chronological approach to the archaeological material of the post-Roman period in order to emphasize the changes that can be observed in the physical evidence and some of the reasons for them that can be suggested. The environment in which people functioned and how they expressed themselves - for example in their houses and burial practices, their pottery and their clothes - show how they were constrained by social customs and economic pressures.

Author: Peter R. Schmidt
Genre: Social Science
Release: 2006-08-11
Publisher: Rowman Altamira
Pages: 240

Historical Archaeology in Africa is an inquiry into the questions that count, proposing different ways of thinking about historical archaeology. Peter Schmidt challenges readers to expand their horizons beyond the ethnocentrism of archaeology, as it is defined and practiced in North America. Confronting topics of oral traditions, our orientation to archaeology, and the misrepresentation of various cultures, Schmidt calls for a new pathway to an enriched, more nuanced, and more inclusive historical archaeology.

A New Deal For Southeastern Archaeology

Responsive image
Author: Edwin A. Lyon
Genre: History
Release: 1996
Publisher: University of Alabama Press
Pages: 283
ISBN: 9780817307912

Recipient of the 1994 Anne B. and James B. McMillan Prize This comprehensive study provides a history of New Deal archaeology in the Southeast in the 1930s and early 1940s and focuses on the projects of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, the Civil Works Administration, the Works Progress Administration, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the National Park Service, and the Smithsonian Institution. Utilizing primary sources including correspondence and unpublished reports, Lyon demonstrates the great importance of the New Deal projects in the history of southeastern and North American archaeology. New Deal archaeology transformed the practice of archaeology in the Southeast and created the basis for the discipline that exists today. With the current emphasis on curation and repatriation, archaeologists and historians will find this volume invaluable in reconstructing the history of the projects that generated the many collections that now fill our museums.

Archaeology Of The Chinese Bronze Age

Responsive image
Author: Roderick B. Campbell
Genre: History
Release: 2014-12-31
Publisher: ISD LLC
Pages: 208
ISBN: 9781938770401

Archaeology of the Chinese Bronze Age is a synthesis of recent Chinese archaeological work on the second millennium BCE--the period associated with China's first dynasties and East Asia's first "states." With a focus on early China's great metropolitan centers in the Central Plains and their hinterlands, this work attempts to contextualize them within their wider zones of interaction from the Yangtze to the edge of the Mongolian steppe, and from the Yellow Sea to the Tibetan plateau and the Gansu corridor. Analyzing the complexity of early Chinese culture history, and the variety and development of its urban formations, Roderick Campbell explores East Asia's divergent developmental paths and re-examines its deep past to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of China's Early Bronze Age.
