Archaeology In America An Encyclopedia 4 Volumes Description: The greatness of America is right under our feet. The American past—the people, battles, industry and homes—can be found not only in libraries and museums, but also in hundreds of archaeological sites that scientists investigate with great care. These sites are not in distant lands, accessible only by research scientists, but nearby—almost every locale possesses a parcel of land worthy of archaeological exploration. Archaeology in America is the first resource that provides students, researchers, and anyone interested in their local history with a survey of the most important archaeological discoveries in North America. Leading scholars, most with an intimate knowledge of the area, have written in-depth essays on over 300 of the most important archaeological sites that explain the importance of the site, the history of the people who left the artifacts, and the nature of the ongoing research. Archaeology in America divides it coverage into 8 regions: the Arctic and Subarctic, the Great Basin and Plateau, the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, the Midwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the West Coast. Each entry provides readers with an accessible overview of the archaeological site as well as books and articles for further research.

Archaeology And Language Iv Description: Archaeology and Language IV examines a variety of pressing issues regarding linguistic and cultural change. It provides a challenging variety of case-studies which demonstrate how global patterns of language distribution and change can be interwoven to produce a rich historical narrative, and fuel a radical rethinking of the conventional discourse of linguistics within archaeology.

Cyber Archaeology And Grand Narratives Description: This volume asks how the current Information Technology Revolution influences archaeological interpretations of techno-social change. Does cyber-archaeology provide a way to breathe new life into grand narratives of technological revolution and culture change, or does it further challenge these high-level theoretical explanations? Do digital recording methods have the potential to create large, regional-scale databases to ease investigation of high-level theoretical issues, or have they simply exposed deeper issues of archaeological practice that prevent this? In short, this volume cuts beyond platitudes about the revolutionary potential of the Information Technology Revolution and instead critically engages both its possibilities and limitations. The contributions to this volume are drawn from long-term regional studies employing a cyber-archaeology framework, primarily in the southern Levant, a region with rich archaeological data sets spanning the Paleolithic to the present day. As such, contributors are uniquely placed to comment on the interface between digital methods and grand narratives of long-term techno-social change. Cyber-Archaeology and Grand Narratives provides a much-needed challenge to current approaches, and a first step toward integrating innovative digital methods with archaeological theory.

Proceedings Of The Second International Conference On The Archaeology Of The Fourth Nile Cataract Berlin August 4th 6th 2005 Description: The region of the Fourth Nile Cataract in northern Sudan is a hitherto little researched part of the Nile valley which will soon be ?ooded by the rising waters of a large hydro-electric dam. The reservoir will cause the irreversible loss of the rich cultural heritage of this remote part of the Middle Nile. As an answer to this threat the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums of the Sudan inaugurated the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, in which numerous international missions from several European countries and the United States participate. The volume assembles 20 papers from the ? elds of archaeology, ethnography and geography originally presented at the 2nd International Conference on the Archaeology of the 4th Nile Cataract held at Humboldt University Berlin in 2005. The contributions span a wide thematic and temporal range from general survey results and site excavation reports from different concessions to specialised articles on burial types, pottery, rock art, inscriptional material, site preservation and on the modern life of the Manasir people.
